Brooky News - Issue  24       Wednesday  13 August  2008

Dear Parents

I am away for part of this week with Year 6 on their excursion to Canberra and the Snowy Mountains.  This is a wonderful educational and social experience for them and, with the help of Mr Taylor, they will produce a newspaper recounting their journey.  This will hopefully go home with all families next week.

Year 6 write a journal each night of their excursion,  Below is Moanas journal entry, written on Tuesday night.

Best Wishes

Steve Richard
Principal

Journal Entry

Today was awesome, we woke up and got ready. We had a lot of yummy food for breakfast. I liked it all except the baked beans - yuk!

We dressed in our ski gear, got our bags and got onto the coach. I was so excited. Then we were driving along and we saw snow and everyone was getting more and more excited. We had to stop so Sasha, our coach driver could put chains over the tyres so we didn't slip on the road.

We arrived at Mt Selwyn to do some skiing. We put on our boots and got our skis and stocks. We went outside and it was snowing and we had our ski lesson. They taught us how to put on our skis and how to stop. They said we had to ski in a V shape. My leader was Scott and I was in the beginners class because it was my first time skiing.  My favourite stop was the J stop but I liked the snow plough too. We learnt to ride on the chair lift, it was fun.

We had hot dogs for lunch and even though it was so cold it was yummy. After lunch we had a free ski. When we finished we packed up and took our gear back then we had a snow fight.

An invitation is going home with today’s newsletter for all dads to a Fathers Day breakfast with their children to be held at school on Friday morning 5 September.  It will be a cooked breakfast so it is important to reply so that we can order the right amount of food.

Year 6 were asked to write a story about their dads.  Eight have been selected to be displayed along with stories from other schools at Warringah Mall on the Galleria level near David Jones.  Congratulations to Brittany Thew (Principal's choice), Brooke Davies, Jamie Hall-Burton, Cheena Jayara, Raymond Ruan, Jason Vo and Aaron Mahboob.

Child Protection
As part of the PD/Health/PE curriculum, students will participate in child protection lessons this term.  These lessons will help children to identify dangerous or uncomfortable situations and to seek help from trustworthy adults.  Some lessons may involve the naming of body parts.  The lessons have been developed by the Department of Education and are an important priority for schools.

I will be talking about this program at the P & C meeting which will be held on Tuesday 19 August at 2 pm.  For parents unable to attend this meeting, there will be an opportunity to ask questions at the School Council meeting on Tuesday 26 August.

We trust that you will support your child's participation in the program.  Please contact the Principal or your child's class teacher if you have any questions.

Gym Classes
This term gym  classes will continue each Monday for the rest of  this term.  Classes are being taught by a qualified gym instructor under the supervision of the class teacher.  Children should wear sports uniform on Mondays for the remainder of the term to make participation in the activities easier.  Girls might prefer to wear maroon shorts or track pants for gym classes.
