At our school we have home reading. It is called the 100 Reader Club. It started at 1996. It is a good practice for reading.
In Kinder Years 1 and 2 it is called ‘Read With Me‘. Parents have to read with you. In Years 3 to 6 it is called ‘Let‘s Read‘ and you can read by yourself.
You have a yellow plastic Home Reading Bag and a record card to fill out every time you read. You have to read for 15 minutes and every 25 times you read you get a certificate.
If you read 100 times you get a big certificate on Assembly and on Presentation Night you get a great book prize. We have lots and lots of prizes. If you read 250 times at home you get a book and a medallion as well.
You can use books from school, the Library or home. It is really good
because it encourages you to become better readers.
At our school we have a Home Reading Scheme. First you get 25 then 50 and then you get 75 then 100 and then we get a special certificate and a book as a prize. If you read 250 times you get a medallion as well.
We started this in 1996 and it really helps the children read. You have to write down each time you read as you go and get your mum or dad to sign it on a special record sheet.
In 1998 more than 130 of the 160 children got a book and 18 got medallions.
Dear Parents
Children will be bringing home their new 'Home Reading Scheme' record card today. It has been issued to all children Kinder to Year 6 and is to be an integral part of our school reading program.
Reading is the single most important skill the child will learn at school and while many children have developed reading skills, further development depends on using these skills regularly.
The card will be your child's only record for home reading and should be brought to school daily in the home reading bag. Teachers may use the scheme differently according to the classroom reading program but all children will be encouraged to read regularly at home and complete the form. Children will be encouraged to borrow home readers from school as well as from the school library.
'Read with me' is for Kinder to Year 2 - children and parents reading books together. 'Let's Read' is for children Years 3 to 6 - parents are asked to supervise children reading regularly and are encouraged to share reading books with their children.
The following points may help and your child make the most of this scheme:
1. Always be positive - you can't make a child read BUT you can ensure you provide enough stimulating material at an appropriate level that your child will want to read.
2. Your own role model is very important. Do you read and discuss books in front of your children?
3. Make sure your child is not making 'heavy weather' of their reading.
4. Let children choose what they read. The aim is to enjoy reading, not what we think it is good for them. Never criticize their choice of book.
5. Share reading, take it in turns reading a page.
6. Be aware of your child's favourite author, sort of books or series e.g. 'Baby-sitter's Club'.
7. Make use of book clubs. There are lots of reasonably priced, quality books.
8. Visit your local library or bookshop together - get the whole family to borrow and read at once.
9. Reading books do not have to be restricted to English.
Awards will be provided:
25 Club - 25 reading sessions or books read - class certificate.
50 Club - 50 reading sessions or books read - large class certificate.
75 Club - 75 reading sessions or books read - Principal's certificate.
100 Club - 100 reading sessions or books read - A large certificate presented at Assembly and book presented at Presentation Day Assembly. Parents will be invited to attend the presentation.
250 Club - 250 reading sessions or books read - A large certificate presented at an Assembly and a medallion presented on Presentation Night.
It is anticipated that all children will reach 100 club but every child
will have their achievements rewarded at some level every year. The scheme
awards are for each calendar year.
1. Please ensure that every child has a book that they can begin to read. It might be an idea for the children to write their name on the sheet.
2. Discuss the scheme with your class - to make sure they know what is their (or their parents) responsibility to enter the name of the book they are reading and not to loose the card. No other record is kept.
3. Talk about the books they might like to read and about what level might be appropriate.
4. Talk about where books might come from, e.g.. classrooms, school library, local library, book club and home.
5. The record card is to be brought to school daily with their reader in their home reading bag.
6. Ask children to share with the class favourite books they have read.
7. Note to parents to be included in the card to be read when when it goes home.
8. Please ask children to write their name & class on the inside sheet.
9. Remind the children to bring their home reading card every day in their Reading Bag.
10. Stress that books do not necessarily have to be in English. Other languages are acceptable.
11. Stress READING SHOULD BE FUN.
