Evonne Goolagong-Cawley was a famous international
women's tennis player. Evonne Goolagong-Cawley was born in Griffith, NSW in 1951. She was raised in Barella and was spotted by tennis coach Vic Edwards when she was only 13 years of age. Evonne Goolagong-Cawley has won 17 state titles, 3 Australian Hardcourt championship (1970-1972), the Australian Singles championships four times (1974-1976, 1978), the French Open in 1971, the Italian Open in 1973, the South African Open in 1977 and 3 Virginia Slims events. The crown of her great career was two Wimbledon Singles titles, beating fellow Aussie Margaret Smith-Court 6-4, 6-1 in 1971, and American Chris Everet-Lloyd 6-1,7-6 in 1980. Evonne Goolagong-Cawley was Australian Of The Year and Australian Sports person of The Year, and is awarded both an AO (Officer of the Order of Australia) and an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire). Evonne's only failure was in the United States Singles titles in which she was runner-up on four separate occasion. Evonne Goolagong-Cawley retired from professional tennis in 1982. |
