Early Life

* Joseph Lyons was born at Stanley Tasmania on September 15, 1879.
* His father never held a job for a long time and was a gambler.
* At age 9 Joe Lyons went to work after school to help with family while studying at Hobart.
* He went to Tasmanian Teachers College in Hobart.
* He got married in June 1855. 
* 1909 elected to Tasmanian Parliament.
* 1912 Treasurer, Minister for Education & Railways.
* 1923 Premier of Tasmania for next 5 years.

Achievements in Parliament

* 1929 Elected to Commonwealth Government in Labor Government.
* Argued with the Treasurer about how to solve the depression.
* 1931 resigned from the Labor Party to form the 'All for Australia League'.
* 1931 was elected as Prime Minister in the United Australia Party.
* The government was concentrating on achieving financial stability and lowering unemployment which reached a peak in December 1932.
* This was a difficult time because of large unemployment due to the Great Depression.
* Lyons was in office until he died in 1939. The first PM to die in office.
* After a state funeral in Sydney his coffin was transported to Tasmania on a Royal Australian Navy ship.
* Joseph Lyons contribution to Australia was he provided stable leadership in Australia's worst time, the Great Depression.
