* John McEwen was born on the 29th March 1900 in a small country town
called Chiltern.
* When John was only 18 months old his mother died tragically.
* Seven years later his father died so he and his sister went and lived
with their grandmother.
* John left school at the age of 13 and started work as a messenger boy.
* At 15 he became a office clerk for the Crown Solicitors Office.
* At 18 John joins the Australian Imperial Forces and becomes a soldier.
* He is granted his own land so he starts his own dairy farm but he soon
switches to sheep shearing.
Achievements in Parliament
* John won the seat of Uchua in the House of Representatives in 1934
as a member for the Country Party.
* Made trade deals with the United Kingdom and Japan which helped the
Wheat and Dairy Industries.
* John became Minister for External Affairs.
* Served as Deputy Leader of the government for Prime Ministers Menzies
and Holt.
* Served Parliament for a total of 37 years.
* Prime Minister for 3 weeks, 19th December 1967 to 10th January 1968,
after the death of Harold Holt.
* He finished in Parliament in 1971 and was knighted the same year.
* John McEwen made the nation recognise country needs and made major
contributions to policies which affected rural towns.
