Year 6 at the Press Conference.

By Stella and Daisy

The Cabinet is made up of the Premier and the Senior Parliamentary members or Ministers. This is also called the Ministry. The Premier appoints the Ministers and can also remove them if he or she feels they are not doing a good job.

The Cabinet actually governs by providing policy and direction for the Government. Each Minister is responsible for a department such as education, health, police or transport.

There are usually about 20 Ministers appointed from either house of Parliament, although the Premier and most other Ministers are from the Legislative Assembly, a Minister can also be from the Legislative Council.

The Premier and the Treasurer must be members of the Legislative Assembly. The convention is that a government needs the confidence of the Legislative Assembly in order to govern. If it loses this it would be expected to resign.
