On the 6th of May 2003 Year 6 and Year 5 went down stairs to the Library
because the police from C.A.R.E.S. were going to talk to us about road safety.
They were telling us what to do before we went on the excursion to C.A.R.E.S.
They talked to us about if you are going to go for a ride you must always
wear your helmet in case you get demolished by a car. Then she said to us
listen up for tonight this is what your going to do for your homework.
You must do the A, B, C, quick Check and make sure that your helmet straps
on the side is a V shape and that you can fit two fingers under your chin.
The next day we went to C.A.R.E.S. and have heaps
of fun riding bikes and learning to be safe on the roads.

On the 7th of May, 2003 classes 5G and 6T went to C.A.R.E.S. which stands
for Community and Roads Education Scheme. C.A.R.E.S. is about teaching kids
how to be safe on bikes, where to ride and how to ride on a bike in the roads.
It is about a twenty minute by bus to C.A.R.E.S. and when we arrived we were
put into equal groups. The groups were red, white and yellow. We all got
seats and we settled down.
The first thing the red group did was watch the video. The white group did
the obstacle course first and the yellow did the mini road first
The first thing we did was watch a video about a boy that got a new bike
for his birthday. As his dad was trying to tell him some safe rules the son
speed out of the drive-way and was hit by a car. Then he was taken up to
heaven.
He had to start again by doing things right and every time he did that he
got a piece of his bike back and when he did something bad he lost a piece.
When he got all his parts back he came back to Earth and had another try
and he did it right.
We saw a picture and an article in the newspaper about a boy who was hit
by a car and only survived because he wore his helmet.
Then we checked out a bike that had all sorts of problems like the handle
bars were the wrong way around and the tyres were flat, we also learned the
A, B, C quick Check. A stands for air in your wheels, B stands for your brakes
and C stands for chain and for cranks (pedals). Check stands for check your
bike to see if it works properly.
Then we came out and we had recess and then I played football. Then my group
went and did the obstacle course. We started by going in and out through
the course and Constable Jones showed us what to do and how to do it. Then
we each got a bike and lined up.
The first thing we had to do was weave through little plastic cones. When
he arrived at a cone the second person went. At the end of the weaving there
was a stop sign, we had to stop and the turn the corner and go down a line
as straight as possible, then do a stop sign signal scan left, right, left.
We would go through the corner in that lane, we could go as fast as we wanted
to go but when we arrived at a little red box we had to slow down really
fast then around that corner we had to go really slow.
Then we had a competition for the slowest in every group. The best in the
girls was Katrina and the best boys was Jordan. Katrina and Jordan then had
a race and Katrina won that.
At lunch we played cricket and walked around the track of the road. We had
to look at the traffic lights and then we came back and sat down.
Our next part of C.A.R.E.S. was doing the mini road. We went around the track
and Constable Jones showed us what to do and how to do it.
I was in the first group of three to get a bike then I rode to where we started.
We did a stop sign signal, showed what we do when we turned left and we rode
off.
The first thing I did was go to the traffic lights. During the time on the
road I lost 3 points. One for not doing a stop sign signal and the other
2 for speeding and going off the road. Some people lost their points for
yelling at other people. Some people lost no points and some lost one, two
and others lost three. One person lost all their points.
When Constable Jones blew his whistle we stopped and when he blew it a second
time we had to go to the parking lot. Then we were grouped into pairs I was
with Kylie. We then lined up to put our bikes away and then we sat back in
the stand.
The Constables thanked us for helping them put the bikes away and six people
were given awards for being well behaved. They got to get the first seats
in the bus and the people that had lost three or more points had to pick
up some rubbish.
