Some of the thick coats explorers wore in Antarctica.

By Rhys

On the 30th of April classes 5G and 6T went on a excursion to the Imax Theatre and the Maritime Museum. We took a bus from school to Darling Harbour and we got dropped about 25m away from our first stop, the Imax Theatre.

At the Imax Theatre we watched a movie about Antarctica. The movie was about Earnest Shackleton, he tried to get to the south pole 2 times but someone had already got there. So then he tried to cross Antarctica from sea to sea.

He needed 27 volunteers and 5000 people volunteered. He chose some officers, a carpenter, his best friend and some scientists. The boat they used was called the Endurance.

When they got there they got stuck in the ice for 18 months then the ice started to crush the boat and then it started to sink.

So they decided to abort the mission and head to Elephant Island. When they got there Shackleton with 6 men to South Georgia Island to get help from a whaling station. They all got back home safe and it took two years, an amazing example of human endurance.

Then we went to Maritime Museum to look at the Antarctica exhibit then we went back to school

On Wednseday the 30th April, Years 5 and 6 went on a Heroes of Antarctica excursion. We first  went to see Shackleton's Antarctica Adventure at the IMAX theartre. Then we went to the National Maritime Museum.

I have never been to the Imax before and I really thought it was fantastic. The people were on ice and I thought that I was with them. There were penguins and seals. There were special dogs that pulled the sleds. The people slept in tents and stayed five months on the ice.

At the Museum we saw Pictures, clothes, old tools and many other things.

The James Caird which Shackleton & five others sailed to South Georgia island.

On Wednesday 30th April two classes were on an excursion. The classes were 5G and 6T. The bus took us to Darling Harbour to the Imax Theatre. Inside the theatre there was a huge screen.

We watched Shackleton. The movie was about early explorers discovering Antarctica. Earnest Shackleton was a fine leader including his 27 men. They all travelled to the Antarctica. They got stuck in the ice. In the end 6 of the men sailed to South Georgia island and they made it there through the rough seas and windy conditions. It was really cool in there.

After that we walked to the Maritime Museum. We were divided into groups and we were looking at different exhibits about explorers from Antarctica.

Next we went to the ship called the Vampire. It was a destroyer in the Australian Navy. It was high when we were on it. Again we were still in groups. My group was looking at different sizes of bombs. Torpedoes would fire out from the ship too. On the top of the ship was the captain‘s seat and other stuff.

Everyone had a great time at Darling Harbour in the Imax theatre, Maritime Museum and the Vampire Ship.
