Lots to see and touch!

By Joseph

On the 6th of February, 5/6T went to a programme called Waste Watchers in the I.T. Centre. We learnt about all the different 7 plastics, and the you could only recycle types 1 and 2.

There were 3 types of things you could do with certain things you were finished with. There was recycling, like bottles, tins, cans and glass, but not broken glass, then there was garden waste, which became compost or mulch and last of all garbage, which becomes landfill, beneath things like football and cricket parks!

Some things you can‘t recycle are lids and plastic bags, you should wash bottles before throwing them out, also things like milk cartons and juice poppers are covered in plastic, so they go in the "bottles and cans" section not the "paper and cardboard" section, as most people think. Also, if you see the recycle sign and see it on a bottle, that means you can recycle it.

Have you seen the lumpy bottoms of things like lemonade? They're called rocket bottoms, you can recycle them too, and what about the whole type thing at the bottom of bottles like water and juice? They are called thumb prints because you can fit your thumb into them, and yes, they are also recyclable.

Who told me all this? The Lady was from a small organization inside the Waste Watchers Company, called Keep Australia Beautiful, her name was Lisa la Surdo.

On the 6th of February 5/6T had Waste Watchers in the Library.  A lady called Lucy came from Keep Australia Beautiful and talked to us about how we should recycle as much as we can.

Only bottles with numbers 1 and 2 on them could be recycled. Lucy showed us a thing with lots of cans stuck together and told us that's how they recycle the cans.

Lucy showed us different bins with different coloured lids and told us that they take all the rubbish to a place called the Waste Management Centre and buried them in the earth. They also plant some plants on the top of the earth to prevent the rubbish from blowing away.

At the end we had a game which we had to figure out which bin we should put our rubbish in. We all had a fun day and learnt a lot about recycling.

On the 6th of February a lady came to our school to tell us where to put our  plastic and carboards for recycling. She told us there are 7 different types of plastics and you can only recycle those with numbers 1 and 2.

We played games about recyling and looked at pictures of recyling bins and things like that. If we recycle more, that means there is less rubbish waste which is a good thing.
