Testing the Ph. (acidity).
By Tara
On Wednesday the 7th of November Mr Taylor, Eliza, Bree, Emma and I went up to the Wet Weather Shed to do some water testing. We did some testing to see if our school could do Streamwatch properly. We had to sample three different kinds of water.
For sample 1 we had to do a pH test with little strips, pH stand for the acid in the water and alkaline (soapy water). We had to wait for four minutes The result was 7 which means the water is natural water.
For sample 2 we did a pH test and a T.D.S test T.D.S. stands for Total dissolved Solids (measures the salt). The result for the pH test was 5 which means a bit of acid which is not good for water creatures. The result for the T.D.S. was 85.
For sample 3 we did a pH test, Turbidity Test and T.D.S Test. We used the pH strips and left it in the sample for four minutes. Our result was 7 again. For the Turbidity (which means how much dirt) we poured the sample into a tube and kept pouring until we could not see the lines at the bottom. Our result was 18, 18 is a pretty good reading. Then when we finished the Turbidity Test we did the T.D.S Test. Our reading was 108 which means the water is not very good.
We had a great time reading the samples and checking if the water was good or not.
Experimenting the water quality.

On Wednesday the 7th of November Mr Taylor, Tara, Bree, Emma and I did some water testing for Streamwatch. We had three samples to do, there was one clear one, one yucky one , and one in between.
The first sample we did was to test the pH level, the pH level is the amount of acid or acidity in the water. To do this we had to put a pH strip in the water for four minutes, after the four minutes we had to put it on a chart and see what colours it was close to. We got the number seven so that meant the water was pretty good.
The second sample we did was to test the pH level and
total dissolved solids (TDS), the total dissolved solids is the amount
of salts in the water to do this we had to pour about 20 to 30 ml of the
sample into a clean container put a pH strip in and leave it there for
four minutes after that we had to look at the graph our answer was 5 meaning
the water was alright. then we had to test the
total dissolved solids, to do this we had to put our
tds meter into the water and swirl it around then we had to wait till it
got a reading of 300mg.
The 3rd sample we did was to test the pH level, the turbidity and the total dissolved solids. Firstly to do this we had put a pH strip in and wait for 4 minutes our reading was 7 again meaning it was good. Then we tested the total dissolved solids our reading was 108 meaning it was not very good. After that we tested turgidity and we got a reading of 18 meaning it was pretty good.
I learnt a lot doing the water testing.
