Lucy had a map of where you could find gold today.

By Tara

On the 28th of February 2001 we had a lady called Lucy come to talk to us about minerals, such as gold, fools gold, quartz and heaps of others.

Lucy brought us outside and asked Marko to hold a piece of string. Then run until the string ran out. Lucy said that‘s only a quarter of the way that 1 ounce of gold can stretch to. That‘s about 80 km. Then about how gold is so maliable. Did you know 1 ounce of gold can be hammered to 9 square metres.

Lucy brought us back inside and showed us some real gold and fools gold and a piece of quartz with a real gold in it. We had a great time and we learned heaps about different minerals.

See how far gold can stretch.

In March a lady named from the Minerals Council came to our school to talk about gold. First she handed out some photos of the machines they use in the olden days. She also showed us the biggest tractor, it was bigger than the Opera House and there was a car next to it and it was so tiny!

Then she took us outside to show us some lead. She said one ounce of gold can streach from Dee Why to Wollongong and it will be thinner than a strand of hair!

Then we played a game, someone had to pull the string and run back before the lady finishes winding the string up! We had fun and learnt a lot about gold.

On Wednesday 28th of Febuary a lady came to tell us about gold.

She showed us how long and how skinny a gold can be. She also showed us fools gold.

No Miss Brown, that is fools gold!
